Having a top-selling album these days is a huge accomplishment in a music industry that has experienced slumping record sales these past few years. The top-10 albums are the ones that made us move, shake, think, cry, bounce, and listen all year. There is quite a variety of artists on the list, although the biggest sellers are well-known pop acts.Here is iTunes’ list top-selling albums of 2009:
1. Kings of Leon – Only By Night
Kings of Leon reign in the breakdown of iTunes’ best-selling album of 2009.The rock band released four songs that added to the success of album sales: “Sex on Fire”, ‘Use Somebody”, “Closer” and “Crawl”. “Use Somebody” also made its way to the top-selling singles of the year list.
2. Various Artists, Twilight (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) – Following the heavy fan loyalty to the film,the soundtrack to the first movie based off the Twilight book series, sold 165,000 copies its first week.It was released toward the end of 2008, but managed to sell very strongly in 2009 coming in as the number two album of this year.
3. Lady Gaga – The Fame
Lady Gaga is certified as one of the biggest pop acts in the industry today.She bares a resemblence in style to Madonna circa 80s mixed in with a touch of Marilyn Manson and people love it.Her single “Poker Face” and “Just Dance” dominated radio stations across the country for months.
4. Taylor Swift – Fearless
Taylor Swift’s album Fearless birthed three singles including her most acclaimed, “You Belong with Me”. The young country singer’s vocals also lead her to receiving a Music Video Award; a moment that was replayed on several television shows and Internet video sites due to Kanye West interrupting her acceptance speech. All in all, her album is a perfect blend of sincereity, serenity, and warm vocals which will make her a fan favorite for years to come.
5.Dave Matthews Band – Big Whiskey and the GrooGrux King
Dave Matthews Band has been one of the most consistent jam/soft-rock bands for years and came back this year to top charts with Big Whiskey and the GrooGrux King. The first week of its release Big Whiskey and the GrooGrux King sold $420,000 later leading to two Grammy Nominations. Singles that have been released form the album are “You and Me”, “Why I Am”, and “Funny the Way it Is”.
6.Michael Jackson – The Essential Michael Jackson
Michael Jackson’s unprecedented death in June brought together generations of fans who felt the influence of his music.Like most pop stars these days, weeks and weeks after his death, his albums,including The Essential Michael Jackson which features his most popular singles,
flew off store shelves and off of iTunes. There’s no shock that fans’ ode to the deceased King of Pop caused one of his albums to be a big seller in 2009.
7. The Fray – The Fray
Piano rock band, The Fray, released their album early this year and easily climbed up charts, earning the quartet a Grammy nomination for Best Pop Vocal album.The Fray’s second single, “Never Say Never”, has attracted the attention of music listeners and has also justified a Grammy nomination for the group based in Denver.
8 .Jay-Z – The Blueprint 3
Jay-Z graced fans with what they had been waiting for from the 40-year-old rapper – The Bluepring 3. Its first week out, The Blueprint 3 sold 476,000 albums. With the release of this album, he surpassed rock icon Elvis Presely when BP3 became his 11th number one album.
9. Eminem – Relapse
Eminem who was named Artist of the Decade by Billboard, came out of creative hibernation with Relapse, his fifth album and first album in five years.album sold 608,000 sales here in the U.S., while internationally, it sold 1,061,000.Hot singles off of Relapse that landed the lyricist back on top of charts were “Crack a Bottle” and “We Made You”.
10. Black Eyed Peas – The End (The Energy Never Dies)
It’s not a party unless you’ve got a BEP song playing somewhere. For years, the trio has been responsible for many popular dance and club singles.The End produced two well-known singles of 2009 which include “Boom Boom Pow” and “I Gotta Feeling” (the two songs held spots on the Billboard Hot 100 simutaneously).
