Droid Clobbers about other Android phones for Christmas Download

ChristmasDownloadOn Christmas day, the number of downloads from the Android application Droid new phones, and the number of downloads from all leading combination of Android phones, according to a recent report from market analysts about Flurry.

However, Apple’s App Store App is dominating the market.iPhone and iPod Touch users downloads thirteen times as many apps in December as all Android phone users combined, Flurry says. And Apple’s December download volume will be 51 percent higher than November’s, if Flurry’s calculations are correct. By contrast, Android Market downloads only increased 22 percent from November to December.

T-Mobile’s myTouch 3G and G1, and the HTC Hero sold by Sprint, totaled roughly as many apps as those downloaded the Verizon/Motorola Droid phones on December 25.

Is this a new landscape, or was it just a coincidence the day?Flurry’s head of marketing, Peter Farago, emailed in response: “In our estimation, Droid numbers will continue to drive a larger share of downloads for the foreseable future until another Android handset can displace its position as the fastest-selling Android phone.  Also, we have to remember that this is the most marketed Android phone to date, and on Verizon, which has 70 million subscribers.”

So while the Droid is the hotter phone right now in terms of buzz, the numbers point to Apple’s continuing dominance of the app world going into 2010.

TV network at selling online ahead of DVDs

Analysts believe that the alternates focused on image quality and convenience have become major factors in the buying habits of video, especially the latter. As more movies come online and Internet connections become fast enough to download full-length titles, customers are expected to avoid physical copies when possible. The sudden rush of Internet-connected Blu-ray players, TVs and networked media devices like the Apple TV, LG BD390 and Xbox 360 have also meant that significantly more would-be buyers already have a source for Internet video at their TV than even a year ago.

A symbolic change in the video sector is just beginning for the studios to begin posting videos ahead of its Blu-ray and DVD.Lionsgate-owned TV network Showtime has begun selling previously aired episodes of its show Weeds (iTunes) before their release on packaged DVDs, breaking with a tradition of often holding back on Internet releases of whole seasons or movies before physical copies appear. Many TV networks release new episodes through online services the day after airing but seldom release complete packages ahead of time.

The gesture comes several weeks after Sony began offering a movie on networked TVs about a month ahead of the retail release, though this in turn was a repeat of a smaller-scale Sony experiment a year earlier.

These and similar but lower key efforts are believed a concession to a sudden shift away from DVD, which has been a staple of the video industry for roughly a decade. Friday in late November, usually a highlight for film sales,DVD sales slipped about 8 percent where Blu-ray, and now downloads, are estimated to have picked up some of the slack.
