IPhone – Zagat 3.0

Earlier this month, we provides up a sneak peek of Zagat to Go 3.0 for iPhone. On Wednesday, the premium application for browsing restaurant and nightlife ratings ($9.99) became available in the Application Store on iTunes and on your iPod Touch or iPhone.

Zagat 3.0 for iPhone is a significant launch that wraps in augmented reality, just like Yelp’s competing application does for iPhone 3GS phones (augmented reality won’t work on 3G phones for either application).

Zagat trying to out-Yelp Yelp? Probably, and the application certainly provides new, competitive services while trying to reach its aim.

Zagat also arguably one-ups Yelp by providing an offline mode, and by the phone itself addingcomplete reviews. But be forewarned, offline mode takes up a memory chunk and is slowww to download, and any one other than die-hard Zagat fans may be loathe to shell out $10 for quippy reviews.

Revamp iTunes – Apple Needs

We’re still awaiting the Apple’s tablet announcement(Apple is on Pacific Time, keeping the rest of the US eagerly awaiting this morning) which, according to McGraw-Hill, will run off of an iPhone-based operating system. This probably means that the tablet will integrate with iTunes.

Which brings us to an important point: Apple needs to rebuild iTunes. Yes, it’s a good app, but it could be better. It uses many processing power and takes forever to download on Windows (and sometimes even on the Mac, or at least my Mac). It is time for a full revamp of iTunes. It is slow and bloated and apparently without even making any money, Apple is breaking even on the iTunes store.

Apple needs to introduce a service for streaming music. It has the ability, due to its acquisition of Lala, a service streaming music purchased from Apple in late 2009. An Apple streaming music service could help fight against illegal music downloads. Now, no less than 95 % of all music downloads are illegal, according to the head of the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry.

Today Apple event should focus on over just introducing the tablet. Hopefully an iTunes revamp will be mentioned as well.
