Expand iPhone sales on July 30, Apple

NEW YORK (Reuters) – Apple Inc. announced Monday that four model iPhone will be sold in 17 other countries on Friday, July 30.

The new version of the iPhone is on sale in France, Germany, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States in late June, creating a carnival atmosphere, and drawing tens of thousands fans eager to Apple stores and their retail partners.

The iPhone is the main engine of growth for Apple and should soon become the main source of income. The final version will be in 88 countries by September – the proceeds faster than the overall history of the enterprise deployment.

At a press conference last week, Apple chief executive Steve Jobs noted that the handset is not rolling out on time in South Korea, home turf for two of Apple top rivals, Samsung Electronics Co Ltd and LG Electronics Inc.

“It’s going to take us a little longer to get government approval there,” he said.

The bane of thieves – iPhone GPS

Reports have emerged of the owners successfully stolen iPhones simply because the GPS tracking capabilities.

Earlier this week a woman in San Francisco had her iPhone 4 snatched out of her hand by a thief riding a bicycle reported the San Francisco Chronicle. Amusingly the phone was in the process of being used in a demonstration of real-time GPS tracking at the time.

A swift call to the police and the owner was able to give a real-time update on the thieve’s location. Little wonder since the phone belonged to David Kahn, chief executive of Covia Labs which which had been in the process of demonstrating Alert & Respond, software designed for real-time tracking for exactly such circumstances.

Only ten minutes later, the thief was arrested on suspicion of grand theft and possession of stolen property.

In the same week, Angela Devery Melbourne, Australia, has left his new iPhone in a taxi after a night out. Devery was not running a GPS tracking application in time, however, had a subscription to Apple’s MobileMe, which provides mobile tracking and remote deletion / blocking ability.
